Got myself an iPhone 4

July 31, 2010

So yesterday, the day finally came for the release of Apple’s iPhone 4 in Australia and 16 other countries around the world.

I absolutely adored the iPhone 3G and 3GS, so obviously, I just had to get the iPhone 4 too.

As such, I went to my local Apple Store in Chatswood, NSW and lined up for my iPhone at 5:30am for their 8:00am opening.

For those who don’t know, Australia has 4 major carriers for the iPhone. Telstra is the most expensive and best carrier. Optus is one of the other carrier that I had in mind for the iPhone. I have been with Optus for the past 2 years, and while I’m happy 80% of the time, I wanted to move to a better network.

So I decided to port over to Telstra this time, and that’s when everything went downhill. Telstra, for some reason, had a secret mobile plan that definitely beat all other carrier’s offerings by far. However, since it’s secret, the Telstra rep I got assigned had no idea how to sign me up to this plan. I wasted 1.5 hours trying to get myself on the plan I wanted but in the end, the rep denied such a plan existed and wouldn’t sign me up.

Now, I know this plan actually exists as many other people have successfully signed up to it. So since I couldn’t get on the plan I wanted with Telstra, I decided to remain with Optus rather than be put on a plan that didn’t suit my needs.

This is a shame, as I really wanted to switch to Telstra. But unfortunately, after waiting 3 hours in line to get my iPhone, I couldn’t be bothered to argue with the Telstra rep and just recontracted with Optus on a more expensive, less valued plan.
